A study by the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE) revealed that the average glass packaging recycling rate across the European Union (EU) has hit the 73% mark.
According to the data from 2013 released by FEVE, Denmark recycled 98% of the total 150,408 tons of glass packaging consumed in the country.
Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria and Germany are the countries with record striking glass packaging recycling rates.
The glass packaging recycling performance of Italy, the Netherlands and Malta has improved on previous years.
France is the largest consumer of glass packaging using 2,712,000 tons, followed by Germany and the UK.
In total, 16,574,479 tons of glass packaging was consumed across the EU.
FEVE president Vitaliano Torno said: "The high glass recycling rate of 73% shows that the glass packaging model is the best performing closed loop business model, but more resources need to be invested to improve glass recycling even further and especially in countries lagging behind."
The container glass industry is expected to curb environmental footprint through glass recycling.
FEVE Secretary General Adeline Farrelly said: "The same glass can be recycled over and over again.
"We call on the European Commission to acknowledge bottle to bottle multiple recycling in the incoming Circular Economy Proposal: this is key to incentivise real and sustainably sound recycling schemes in the EU and attract investments."
