China's New Standards for Beverage Labeling

China has reportedly introduced a new regulation to standardized beverage labeling, specifically bottled drinking water, in the country.

According to the new standards, bottled water sold in China will be categorised as either "purified bottled water" or "other drinking water", reported CRI English citing the Beijing Youth Daily.

As part of the new set of guidelines, the governement has banned the use of labeling such as as "energy water" or "functional water" for bottled water.

While the new regulation is effective immediately, all bottled water that were produced before 24 May will be exempted from sale ban in China until 1 January 2016.

Further, the regulation also seeks to differentiate between "mineral spring water" and "mineral substance water".

Commenting on the new policy, Master Kong, a major bottle water producer in China, spokesman was cited by the news daily as saying that its products will not feature the "mineral substance water" tags, in a bid to remain in compliance with the new policy.
