Australia-based miner Fortescue Metals Group has announced that it has resumed surface mining operations following the fatal incident earlier this week at its Christmas Creek iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The company said that the heavy vehicle workshop has been released by DMP safety inspectors.
Australia's Department of Mines and Petroleum has issued special directions ensuring that Fortescue tightens safety procedures. The directions require that greater direct supervision and safety checks are provided across all Fortescue mine sites. It requires that all isolation and lock out/tag out procedures are verified by a supervisor.
