San Francisco's 1872 highly eccentric, and self-proclaimed Emperor Norton was the first to decree that a suspension bridge from Oakland to San Francisco was needed. Although his decree to build a bridge was accepted by the public and the SF's political advisers, the task was too much for the city to take on at that time.
After some time and the increased automobile volume, the city of San Fransciso realized it was time to make the investment and build the connecting bridge from Oakland to San Francisco. The design and implementation of the original Bay Bridge took more than 16 years to reach the groundbreaking that took place on November 12,1936.
So much has changed since then and more change is constantly occurring including changes in the East Span's lighting. In fact reconstruction of the old bridge began in 2002 and has continued since then, with the most recent improvements including lighting.
In fact the new East Span bridge will consist of a custom designed cutting-edge lighting system featuring high-performance LED lights that will spread a bright, uniform glow across the roadway.
With better light positioning and the application of LED energy-effeicnt lights:
The road will create a safer driving experience Uses half the energy of standard lights Lasts five to seven times longer Only need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years Decreased lighting maintenance time Fewer lane closures will be required to provide the access East Span will have a total of 1,521 light fixtures
