Fourteen Organizations Sign Paper Cup Recycling Deal with ACE UK

Fourteen organizations from the paper cup supply chain have signed a deal to boost PE lined paper cup recycling in the UK.

The agreement has been signed with Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK), which runs the industry’s recycling program.

The cross-industry collaboration focuses on delivering a long-term, nationwide paper cup recycling solution which complements and builds on the existing recycling activities for the paper cup industry.

As part of this effort, the fourteen companies, which include Benders Paper Cups, Bunzl Catering Supplies, Caffe Nero, Costa Coffee, and Dart Products Europe, have agreed to fund an activity program which provides access to recycling for paper cups for many more people.

Other organizations include Greggs, Huhtamaki, International Paper, McDonald’s UK, Nestlé, Pret A Manger, Seda Group, Starbucks, and Stora Enso.

The fourteen companies have agreed to fund activity program which will give access to recycling for paper cups for many more people.

European packaging trade body Pack2Go chair Mike Turner said: “This collaborative agreement, funded entirely by the signatories, is a clear demonstration of the commitment of these organizations, from across the paper cup supply chain, to address the barriers to recycling and deliver practical solutions to maximize recycling of paper cups.”

As part of this effort, all ACE UK bring banks will accept paper cups for recycling, delivering an additional 382 recycling points across the UK with further 33 recycling points scheduled for operation during next phase.

ACE UK said that the cups collected from the recycling points will be processed at its recycling facility in Halifax. It will also work to include cups in local authority kerbside collections.

ACE UK CEO Richard Hands said: “Whilst it is early days, we have a clear measured plan agreed and expect to see significant progress in cup recycling over the next two years and beyond.”
