Lamborghini has taken the wraps off its new Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 racer following a fresh commitment from the iconic Italian marque to a GT3 motorsport program for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.
The new Gallardo GT3 FL2 was developed by Lamborghini’s R&D motorsport program. It will partner with German-based Reiter Engineering, with whom it has signed a minimum five-year agreement.
Based on the 2013 Lamborghini Gallardo, the main focus of the GT3 FL2’s development is on endurance performance and includes features such as ’24-hour brakes’, improved engine cooling and reduced fuel consumption.
Other improvements include a more efficient aero kit, a new front splitter and a rear carbon diffuser based on that used on the Gallardo Super Trofeo. The power-to-weight ratio has also been enhanced with the GT3 FL2’s weight down by 25kg over the previous Gallardo GT3.
Low running cost was another focus of the car’s development, with the Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 FL2 claiming a benchmark euro 9 ($11.50)/km to euro 12 ($15.50)/km for parts rebuild costs. The GT3 FL2 is priced at euro 320,000 ($413,000) plus taxes.
Although Reiter Engineering has been developing its own Lamborghini GT cars since 2000 – securing countless victories and podiums in GT championships – this is the first time a GT3 contender has been developed with direct factory collaboration.
The first of the new Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 FL2 cars will be delivered to teams in Europe and Asia from March.
