The third-generation Audi TT has been spied testing in Germany, providing our first look at the current sports car’s upcoming replacement.
Due to launch in 2014, the all-new Audi TT was spotted in prototype form by CarAdvice’s spy photographers being testing alongside the current second-gen TT, a BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK and the Peugeot RC-Z.
Sharing its Volkswagen Group MQB platform with the new Audi A3 and Mk7 Volkswagen Golf, the third iteration of the TT will be lighter and stiffer than the outgoing model and ride on a longer wheelbase.
Apart from aiding performance, ride and handling, less weight will also result in improved fuel economy from what will be an entirely turbocharged engine line-up comprising both petrol and diesel powerplants.
Clearly continuing with the model’s classic coupe proportions – first seen when it debuted in 1998 – the new TT appears set to follow Audi‘s latest design language with a large central grille and slimmer, sharper headlights.
At the rear new LED tail-lights join an extended rear bumper and a dual-exit exhaust system. Lower-set wing mirrors also sit above a new character line that runs the length of the car.
To again be offered in front- and all-wheel drive, the standard Audi TT will be followed by uprated S and RS performance variants along with a drop-top roadster version.
Head of Volkswagen Group design Walter de Silva told CarAdvice in March, that the third-generation TT draws inspiration from the first two generations while also introducing fresh design elements.
“The car looks TT, 100 per cent, but in a different way. You will see,” de Silva said.
“The new one for me is better because we drove the personality, especially in the front [it] is really different to other Audis…
“From the side and from the rear it retains the character of TT.”
The second-generation Audi TT launched back in 2006.
