Applied Silicone Introduces Medical Grade Silicone Adhesive Gels

Applied Silicone Corporation,a global supplier of long-term implantable silicones for the medical device and critical healthcare market, introduces medical grade silicone Adhesive Gels optimized for scar management products.  Traditional methods for improving the aesthetics of hypertrophic and keloid scarring include cover-ups and laser or surgical procedures. Alternative cosmetic or textile covers can be messy and require an aggressive bond to the skin.Silicone gel, in topical or sheeting form, has the ideal combination of gentle, secure adhesion, moisture barrier, and permeability in order to minimize the appearance of old and new scars.

Adhesive Gels are specially formulated silicone gels that possess the ideal properties of traditional silicone gels but with greater cohesive strength for durability.  They can be cast or molded in unlimited thickness by virtue of a polyaddition cure mechanism that produces no by-products.  Inherently hydrophobic, gels provide an excellent water barrier yet are permeable to water vapor and air.  A breathable barrier surface applied over a scar will promote a reduction in the appearance by maintaining a clean, hydrated skin surface under the gel.  With great cohesion, Adhesive Gels are resistant to tear and fracture in daily wear. The product is fabricated using a medical grade dimethyl silicone system that is non-toxic, non-allergenic, non-sensitizing, and meets ISO requirements for prolonged skin contact as supported by preclinical testing for cytotoxicity and sensitization.

Adhesive Gel systems are designed with intermediate viscosities and are self-leveling to combine minimal run-off and good unsupported build; ideal for knife coating onto support substrates. Experienced medical device manufacturers establish their preferred mix ratio to obtain the ultimate combination of firmness and surface tack.

"Adhesive Gel systems offer the cohesion, permeability, surface tack, biocompatibility, and high strength ideal for scar management," said Norm Riley, Technical Marketing Manager at Applied Silicone.  "They provide an effective barrier to the elements and protect underlying skin from contamination while maintaining hydration to minimize a scar's appearance."
