The German Association of the Sawmilling & Timber Industry (BSHD) says current production cutbacks at German sawmills will be followed by an extended Christmas shutdown period, with further curtailments likely in 2012. BSHD expects to see curtailment announcements for next year in response to specific market situations. Discussions between BSHD and member companies has revealed considerable concern about the high log prices sawmillers are having to pay. “The German timber products as a whole are thus simply no longer competitive on price, ” BSHD said. “As a result, this has affected lumber exports. ” “Cutbacks began in November and will be extended further in December and culminate in extended outages over next year. ” BSHD’s member companies represent approximately two-thirds of the German sawmilling industry.
