Sonoco Acquires Plastic Packaging to Expand Flexible Packaging Capabilities

Global packaging firm Sonoco has acquired privately held flexible packaging company Plastic Packaging (PPI) in a bid to expand its capabilities in Southeast US.

However, the financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

PPI is engaged in providing short-run, customized flexible packaging for food products including frozen foods, baked goods, seafood; pet products such as dry food, bird seed, litter; and health and personal care including nutraceuticals, diapers, tissues/wipes.

PPI, which was established in 1957, employs approximately 170 at its two manufacturing facilities in Hickory, North Carolina, and Forest City, North Carolina, US.

Sonoco Global Consumer Solutions senior vice-president Rob Tiede said: “This acquisition grows our flexible packaging assets in the southeast U.S., adding short-run capabilities that allow us to offer additional specialty and customization capabilities to our customers.

“PPI complements Sonoco’s existing technologies and leverages our expertise in flexible packaging, while expanding our customer base in complementary markets.”

Sonoco expects the acquisition to provide additional lamination, wide and narrow web flexographic printing, and pouch and bag forming capabilities while expanding its customer base.

In September, Sonoco ThermoSafe has acquired the assets and operations of Laminar Medica in the UK and Czech Republic, from UK-based medical products company Clinimed for undisclosed amount.

Sonoco is a provider of diversified consumer packaging, industrial products, protective packaging, and packaging supply chain services. It also produces composite cans, tubes, and cores.
