The Department for Environment,Food and Rural Affairs(Defra)is asking businesses and consumers for their views on the government's plans to bring in legislation that will improve the information provided to consumers,so they are able to make informed choices about the food they buy.
The updated legislation will implement the European Union food labelling legislation and will also reflect current industry practice and consumers'changing information needs.
The proposed regulation includes changes to the provision of allergen information in catering establishments;nutrition labelling, labelling of nano-materials and a number of other labelling provisions.
There are still decisions to be made about how to implement the UK legislation-the Food Information Regulation-and so the Government is encouraging businesses and interested parties to respond to the consultation.
Defra noted that the consultation ends on 30 January 2013.There will be further, separate consultations in Northern Ireland,Scotland and Wales.
