At the first temporary meeting of the Taiwan LED Lighting Alliance, Frank Chien, chairman of Formosa Epitaxy, stated that Taiwan-based firms need to find new markets and business models instead of focusing on taking OEM orders. The alliance plans to set up LED lighting fixture and module standards in accordance with the standards in China in eight months.
Industry sources noted that the industry is likely to mass produce LED chips with brightness efficiency of 180lm/W in 2013.
Chien added that the relationship between Taiwan- and China-based LED industries is no longer purely competitive. Taiwan-based firms should spend 80% of resources to build market share while using 20% of resources to find new business models.
Chien pointed out that current market opportunities include traditional lighting replacement, domestic and international government projects, and becoming a supplier for international firms. Innovative business models include setting up lighting design centers and providing products for public lighting.
