Global barrier films supplier Toppan Printing will be constructing a new plant in Georgia which will use innovative technology to produce environment-friendly packaging.
The new plant will help the company strengthen its capacity to supply transparent barrier films like GL Film to food, electronics and medical packaging manufacturers in North America and Europe.
The company that has expanded its subsidiaries' operations throughout the U.S. in the past couple of years plans to invest about $100m at this facility for its Going Green initiative.
The US market is expected to see an increase in the demand of barrier films where the food packaging industry is witnessing large structural shifts, stated the company. The markets are seeing the increase in the need for longer shelf lives that has been brought on by lifestyle changes apart from a transition from glass bottles and metal cans to flexible packaging.
Toppan is anticipating further increase in the demand for barrier films owing to the increase in environment considerations.
Mass production at the new facility is expected to start in March 2016.
Toppan began selling their eco-friendly transparent barrier films, including GL Film, in 1986 and has supplied its products to Europe, North America and Southeast Asia apart from Japan.
The company has about 80 subsidiaries in Asia, Europe and the US with an annual sale of roughly about $18bn.
Toppan's GL Film has been utilised for approximately 15,000 products in over 40 countries and regions worldwide.
