Paris Metro stations wiill benefit from LED lighting
The company has won a share of an €11 million (GBP 9.4 million) contract to light the Metro network in Paris.
Philips, in partnership with French lighting company Step, has been given a contract to replace 250,000 lighting points in 302 Metro stations and 66 RER (Réseau Express Régional) stations with energy-efficient LED lighting.
Together, the two companies have secured 85 per cent of the tender awarded by Parisian transport company RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens).
Philips said a switch to LEDs will reduce the energy needed to light up the Metro and suburban RER stations by more than 50 per cent.
The amount of electricity that RATP’s stations currently use represents roughly 12 per cent of its total energy consumption.
Benjamin Azoulay, general manager, Philips Lighting France said: “Philips is proud to work with RATP to help achieve the world’s first transport network whose stations will be fully fitted with LED lighting”.
Around 12 million passengers travel daily around Paris through RATP’s transport network.
