Zhaga Consortium is setting a new standard for LED light engine interfaces, which will create specifications aimed at ensuring the interchangeability of LED light sources from different manufacturers Epistar president Biing Jye Lee stated that LED firms will benefit from LED interchangeable products because they will not be restricted to cooperating with a particular manufacturer for producing products. In addition, Philips and Osram stated that lighting designers and specification professionals around the world now have more freedom to think big because the industry have progressed toward standards established by the Zhaga Consortium and will be able to lower production costs. However, industry sources claimed that this new standard will cause pre-existing supply chains that are not part of Zhaga to reform their supply structure and suppliers will have to find ways to make up for rising costs as they attempt to switch from the traditional lighting industry into the LED one. Lee further stated he feels there will be increased competition between LED manufacturers but recommends that they keep developing LED spare parts and module applications and then further cooperate with traditional lighting manufacturers to make lighting fixtures. Digitimes Research predicts that Zhaga's new standard will only be pushed with new construction projects and public work projects initially, and that 10% of LED lighting will use Zhaga specifications by 2015.
