According to the latest report from United States Department of Energy (DOE), in the past two years, the installation of LED lamp in United States increased 10-fold from 4.5 million units in 2010 to 49 million units in 2012, it is estimated that $ 675 million can be saved in energy costs every year. By 2030, LED lighting is expected to account for 75% of the total lighting sales, the saved energy can be provided for 26 million American families.
Ernest Moniz, Minister of DOE, said that the efficient lighting industry not only can save money for consumers, but also it can increase employment, which is a win-win solution for economy.
Currently, LED's luminous efficiency has been greatly improved, more efficient than traditional lighting, and its service life has been extended to 25 times, but the prices of current LED lighting products are high, DOE selected five solid-state lighting projects as subsidies objects, in order to reduce the production costs of LED lighting, improve production equipments and technology, also enhance the lighting quality and performance.
The LED manufacturers DOE selected as subsidies objects includes Cree, Eaton, OLEDWorks, Lumileds and PPG, and the amount of subsidy they will receive respectively are as following: Cree, US $2.3 million; Eaton, US $2.4 million; OLEDWorks, US $100 million; Lumileds, US $1.8 million; PPG Industry Inc., US $ 2.3 million. The total amount of subsidies is US $10.1 million, and the subsidy program will last for two years.
