The Ford 1.0-litre EcoBoost has been named the International Engine of the Year for the second consecutive year.
Ford’s direct-injection turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine achieved the highest score in the history of the award, and beat Volkswagen’s 1.4-litre four-cylinder twincharger petrol engine and BMW’s 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged four-cylinder petrol to claim the title.
Already available in the B-Max, C-Max and Grand C-Max, Fiesta and Focus in Europe, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost will spread to the EcoSport, Mondeo, Tourneo and Transit line-ups in the short term.
The three-cylinder turbo unit will debut in Australia in the Fiesta and EcoSport in the final quarter of this year.
To meet demand, Ford has confirmed it is doubling production of the engine at its Cologne Engine Plant in Germany from mid August to manufacturer more than 1000 engines per day.
A panel of 87 automotive journalists from 35 countries named the 1.0-litre EcoBoost the winner after assessing its driveability, performance, economy, refinement, and its successful application of advanced technology.
It was also named the winner of the Sub 1.0-litre category, ahead of Fiat’s 875cc two-cylinder turbo (named the Green engine of the year) and Volkswagen’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder from the Up!.
Other notable winners included the 6.3-litre V12 from the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, which scooped the prizes in the Above 4.0-litre and Performance engine of the year categories, McLaren’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo from the MP4-12C (3.0- to 4.0-litre engine of the year), and Volkswagen’s 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol with active cylinder deactivation from the Golf, which claimed the award for the New engine of the year.
Like last year, the judges found no room on the winners’ list for either diesel or hybrid propulsion systems.
