Established mobile baseband processor chipset vendors are anticipated to be key players
LTE chipset market for handsets is expected to reach over 850 million shipments in 2018, according to a report from ABI Research.
According to the report, the established mobile baseband processor chipset vendors are anticipated to have significant share as shift towards LTE continues.
Smaller baseband vendors are expected to have a share in the LTE chipset market, the report added.
ABI Research research director Philip Solis said that the firm expects Broadcom and Intel will be significant challengers to Qualcomm over the next few years.
The report reveals that integrated platforms are provided by four vendors, while other four offer to integrate carrier, whereas 12 vendors offer 23 products supporting Category 3, and five offer ten products to complement Category 4, while LTE baseband products supporting TD-SCDMA to China are supplied by nine vendors.
The report said that different levels of integration and standalone components will be needed for as the timing of various technology shifts across the different components.
Singlemode LTE baseband vendors have an opportunity due to non-handset mobile devices and the wider Internet of Everything in the near term, the report said.
"Eventually, the larger vendors will offer singlemode LTE products, but only after the opportunity for those products becomes much more sizable," Solis added.
"This is a rare opportunity for these smaller vendors to get market traction relatively unimpeded."
