Ardagh Group and French vegetable canner Bonduelle have collaborated to launch a new 400g steel food can, which delivers significant environmental benefits.
According to Ardagh, the development represents an advance in DWI can production and processing technology.
Ardagh has been able to employ nitrogen dosing techniques in food canning and new standards have also been set in light-weighting to provide environmental savings and increase sustainability.
Beading on the can has been removed to form a better look and feel to the packaging and its sleek surface allows for label application or for direct printing onto it.
The new cans, which use 15% less material and withstand pressures of up to 4.5 bar, are made at Ardagh's DWI advanced production facility in Deventer in The Netherlands, and filled at Bonduelle's facility in Vaulx Vraucourt, Northern France.
Initially, Bonduelle will apply the new packaging to its Winter Vegetable range (Red Beans and Black Beans) and will later on apply it for other products in its canned vegetable range.
Ardagh claims that metal cans are 100% recyclable and prevent food spoilage.
