Oman's first sugar refinery facility at the Port of Sohar is set to be to be operational by early 2015.
Port of Sohar executive commercial manager Edwin Lammers said that the facility will be constructed at a waterfront site adjacent to a agro-bulk terminal, which will also be established at the industrial port, reports Oman Daily Observer.
The facility, which will compete with the existing refineries in the Gulf region, is expected to have a processing capacity of approximately one million tons of raw sugar per annum. It will produce about 900,000 tons of fine crystallized sugar.
Lammers said that the plans for the sugar refinery project are progressing well.
Construction work of the refinery is anticipated to start during the mid of this year. The designs of the project are ready, and the applications have been prepared for environmental permits, according to the company.
