In the week ended April 1, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 3 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes an increase of 26.4 percent compared to the previous week ended March 25, in which a week-on-week increase of 1.3 percent in coal shipments had been observed.
In March, Newcastle port exported 11.1 million mt of thermal and coking coal, exceeding the port authority forecast of 10.25 million mt for the whole of March. Newcastle port's thermal and coking coal exports had totaled approximately 11.2 million mt in March 2012.
Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
