Though India is the largest producer of organic cotton in the world, the demand for organic clothing is slowly-picking up in India, mostly because of its high price.
Speaking to fibre2fashion, Mr. Prashant Balar owner of Herbal Fab, which produces apparels from organic cotton, said, “Organic cotton apparels are gaining ground in India but in a very slow pace.”
“Organic cotton garments have a very slow growth in India and it will always remain in the niche market because of its high price,” he adds.
According to him, the demand for organic kidswear garments is rising in the country since people are becoming more aware of the impact of chemical dyes on skin of the babies.
He opines, “The demand for organic cotton clothes in India will only increase through mass production and high competition, as product price will decline only when there is over-supply.”
Managing director of ‘Organic and more’, manufacturer of organic kidswear, yoga clothes, bedwear and kitchenwear, Mr. Vickram Kumar says, “The fashion designers should use more eco-friendly materials, which will help in increasing the demand for organic cotton garments from all parts of the society.”
“However, people are becoming conscious about cleaner and organic cotton apparels as well as the affects of non-organic cotton clothes so there is a long term potential for its growth,” he adds.
Talking about organic cotton kidswear, he says, “The demand for organic kidswear clothing made from eco-friendly materials is increasing since people are worried about the harm caused by clothing made from non-organic materials.”
