Canada's Electricity System Was Built Decades Ago and Requires Significant Renewal

The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) released a policy paper entitled "Power for the Future: Electricity's Role in a Canadian Energy Strategy", which provides a series of recommendations to Canadian premiers as they make decisions about the future of Canada's integrated electricity system.

A few key recommendations in the policy paper revolve around adapting to changing customer relationships, balanced approach to market diversification, and increased support for innovation.

Canada's electricity system was built decades ago and, like any other infrastructure, requires significant renewal, maintenance and servicing, insists CEA. The next wave of Canada's electricity infrastructure will allow for the replacement of higher-emitting, less-efficient generation with non- and low-emitting generation technologies. Over the next 20 years, more than $350 billion needs to be invested.
