Apple Watch 2: New Screen Tech May Hold Key to Longer Battery Life

According to the latest rumours on Friday, Apple may be looking to switch up the screen technology in the next generation Apple Watch 2.

A DigiTimes report says Apple is plotting a shift from OLED to Micro LED technology.

Such a move would allow Apple to boost the Apple Watch 2’s battery life as Micro LED technology is more power efficient.

This is because the panels are not powered by a backlight, which 9to5Mac points out also allows them to be thinner.

The tech also offers a better colour gamut and brightness than LCD tech.

While the move would be a boost for watch fanciers who skipped the Apple Watch due to the need to charge it ever day, there may be some drawbacks.

The Micro LED technology is currently more expensive to produce than the OLED screens. Whether Apple would be willing to absorb those costs and keep the Apple Watch at the same price remains to be seen.

With all that being said, its important to consider the source of the report. DigiTimes has a mixed record at the best of times. Regardless, it remains interesting to examine ways Apple could eek more battery life out of its smartwatches.
