Peru’s National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Intellectual Property Protection (INDECOPI) has reiterated that it is conducting investigation on Chinese clothing imports and US cotton imports under the framework of the powers and standards set by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The investigations related to the import of clothing from China and cotton from the United States are being carried out while adhering to legal framework of the WTO, INDECOPI said in a statement.
The Committee on Antidumping and Subsidies (CFD) began investigation on both issues last year, and the investigation process is still underway, and INDECOPI would issue the appropriate decision, within the law, once the investigation concludes.
Under its current monitoring of imports, CFD is collecting and analyzing information on the rise of Chinese clothing imports as well as imports of cotton from the US.
In the case of Chinese apparel, it was found that such imports have increased significantly and they would have an adverse effect on the performance of domestic producers.
In the case of cotton, monitoring efforts were made on the existence of subsidies provided by the US Government to favor the production of the products, and thus affecting the export prices.
In relation to the trade defense system established by the WTO, the actions of INDECOPI have always been marked by a high degree of responsibility, prudence and technicality in investigating and implementing corrective measures on imports of dumped or subsidized items, that extend damage to the national economy, the statement said.
