Cree has seen better than expected sales performance for its LED light bulbs made using mid-power LED chips and other international LED lighting vendors will adopt mid-power LED chips as well. As a result, Taiwan-based makers Epistar, Everlight Electronics and Lextar Electronics are expected to obtain orders for making or packaging mid-power LED chips, according to industry sources.
Cree launched LED light bulbs equivalent to 40W and 60W incandescent bulbs in March 2013 and sales have exceeded expectation, the sources indicated. Cree's 60W-equivalent light bulbs made using mid-power LED chips has a luminous efficiency of 84.2lm/W, which is 10-20% higher than the average level, and its performance-cost ratio of 61.7lm/US$ is 20-35% higher, the sources said.
Other international vendors, such as Philips and Osram, will adopt mid-power LED chips for LED light bulbs and seek cooperation with Taiwan-based makers, the sources noted. Since Epistar, Everlight and Lextar are competitive in the mid-power LED segment, they are expected to receive orders from international LED lighting vendors, the sources said.
