Government of India has taken many initiatives to boost the textile industry in the Northern state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
According to an official statement, paying a heed to Member of Parliament Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri’s demand, the Union Ministry of Textiles recently approved two handloom clusters at Saidpora in Shopian and Parigam in Pulwama.
Mr. Ratanpuri also demanded extension of the Carpet Weaving Mass Training Programme, recruitments on vacant positions, hiking the stipend of the trainees, establishment of a Directorate at Srinagar and allocating geographical indication for Kashmir handicrafts, the statement said.
Most of these demands have also been accepted and carpet weaving training programme is still being continued in J&K, even though the programme has been wrapped up in rest of India, the statement said.
It also said that majority of the positions lying vacant for several years have now been filled up, most of them through Staff Selection Commission.
The statement further stated that the Textiles Ministry has also approved the proposal of setting up a Directorate at Srinagar, and has sent the proposal to the Ministry of Finance for financial concurrence.
Moreover, the Textiles Ministry has given its nod to hike the stipend of trainees, but the Central Government is awaiting a no objection certificate (NOC) from the State Handlooms Department prior to its implementation.
