Folding cartons, rigid paper boxes and paperboard specialty products manufacturer Colbert Packaging Corporation has launched patient compliance packaging solutions, MedLock EZT.
The new product is a child-resistant, senior-friendly and sustainable unit dose alternative to amber prescription vials.
MedLock's uses an integrated, patent-pending locking mechanism to lock a pill blister card in its outer paperboard shell. The lock can be opened by squeezing and holding touch-points at one end of the paperboard shell while sliding the blister card out through the other end.
Medication can be pressed through one of the individual blisters once the blister card is exposed and the lock can be reengaged by sliding the blister card back into the outer shell.
Colbert Packaging vice-president of product development Glenn Grosskopf said: "While patient nonadherence continues to plague the industry, and is often the primary driver behind a switch from nondescript pharmacy vials to branded unit dose packages, the packaging alternatives must do more than just promote adherence.
"MedLock EZ is a compact, all-in-one package that provides security and sustainability - and promotes patient adherence."
MedLock EZ has been tested to F=1 for child-resistant and senior-friendly effectiveness - high safety marks by the CPSC and is subjected to consumer product safety commission.
The company claims that owing to its paperboard-based design, MedLock EZ has many branding and sustainability benefits.
The package sports a large printable area that can be used for both brand attribution and for printing medication details, dosing instructions, dates and other information.
While uncoated solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard has been used to manufacture MedLock EZ, it can also be made using other types of paperboard.
Colbert Packaging will exhibit MedLock at Pack Expo.
