Forum Research study has revealed that majority of people in Canada consider plain packaging for cigarettes is an unnecessary waste of government resources.
Commissioned by JTI, the new research showed that eight out of ten Canadians (81%) believe that branding on products will provide consumers with information about a product and helps distinguish one product from another.
Around 74% of Canadians think that tobacco is a legal product that adults are allowed to buy and tobacco companies should be allowed to brand their products.
Around 65% people in Canada believe plain and standardised packaging is unnecessary, while about 64% think that it to be a waste of government resources.
The Australian research demonstrated that consumers are keen on price of the tobacco product as the cheapest product will mostly come from the illegal market.
JTI-Macdonald general manager Igor Dzaja said: "Canadians are right to believe 'plain' packaging on tobacco products won't work.
"The policy has failed in Australia1, where it was introduced nearly five years ago – the government's own data shows that the long-term decline in smoking has now stalled."
