Bangladesh’s Textiles and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui will head the committee constituted by the Government to monitor the working condition and welfare of the workers in the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.

At a meeting of the Cabinet, the proposal to appoint Mr. Siddiqui as head of the monitoring panel, instead of a state minister, was approved.   Speaking to media, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the committee members would visit all the RMG units in the country to oversee the working conditions and workers welfare in these units and present their report to the Government within next three months.   On April 29 this year, the Cabinet constituted a high-powered committee for monitoring workers’ welfare and appointed State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian to lead the committee.

However, following the latest Cabinet decision, Ms. Sufian would now server as the vice-chairman of the committee, Mr. Bhuiyan said.   The committee would also incorporate representatives of Ministries of commerce, textiles and jute industries, home affairs, labour and employment, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and other workers’ leaders, he informed.
