Nan Ya Photonics Inc. yesterday unveiled a demo room for its LED lighting products in the Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) headquarters building in Taipei, and announced it will kick off mechanized assembly lines of LED light bulbs in June this year.
FPG, one of Taiwan’s leading manufacturing conglomerates, opened the LED subsidiary in 2003 and sold part of its ownership in Nan Ya in 2010 to chipmaker Epistar Inc. to further fortify the subsidiary’s technological strength.
According to Nan Ya President B.J. Wu, the automated lines, reportedly Taiwan’s first for LED light bulb production, are projected to turn out a total of 400,000-500,000 bulbs a month at full capacity, allowing the company to supply quality lamps at competitive prices.
The company co-developed the production lines with automation-equipment suppliers, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Epistar.
Wu estimated the automated production lines will carry out the company’s goal of bringing down retail prices of its 7W bulbs to below US$10 per unit by the end of this year, making the lamps affordable to general consumers. He noted that 7W LED replacements for incandescent bulbs are retailed above NT$400 (US$13.3 at US$1: NT$30) now.
Nan Ya introduced light bulbs last year, expanding business into the household market from the corporate market. Products on display in its demo room include T8 light tubes, streetlights, low-bay lights, MR16 lamps, portable luminaires, and horticultural lamps in addition to light bulbs.
Nan Ya Chairman W.C. Wang, the former chairman of Formosa Petrochemical Corp., said the group decided to branch out into the LED sector on account of the outstanding energy-saving performance and zero mercury of the lamps.
