Development of a Volvo V60 Polestar Appears to Be Well Under Way

Development of a Volvo V60 Polestar appears to be well under way with spy images suggesting the Swedish brand will sell a wagon variant of its new, limited edition high-performance player.

Volvo launched the S60 Polestar sedan locally in June with a view to competing with sportier variants of the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, though is restricted in production numbers.

The Volvo V60 caught testing is debadged but wears light camouflage and is finished in the signature Rebel Blue hue of the company’s racing partner, Polestar.

Apart from the test car’s aggressive front lip spoiler, rear diffuser and extended tailgate-mounted rear spoiler, large-diameter alloy wheels with low-profile tyres and huge six-piston Brembo brake calipers telegraph the model’s intentions.

A wagon twin to the Polestar sedan would be expected to feature the same turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder that produces 257kW of power and in excess of 500Nm of torque, as well as all-wheel drive and a six-speed auto.

Speaking at the local launch of the 2014 Volvo S60 and V60, Volvo Car Australia managing director Matt Braid couldn’t confirm the Polestar wagon but said his company would be keen to take such a model if it became available.

“For us, we’ve been a pilot market for the Polestar cars,” Braid said. “So far the pilot’s gone very well and there’s been a lot of interest from overseas.

“Personally, and from a market point of view, we’d love to see it continue and put our hands up for the next round.

“Exactly what that’s going to be… I mean, from our point of view we’d certainly love another S60 as a priority but if there’s other variations then fantastic, we’d take it.”

Limited to 50 units, the Volvo S60 Polestar claims a 4.9-second 0-100km/h and wears a $109,950 price tag.
