Taiwan Jan Thermal Coal Imports Rise 31% on Year

Taiwan imported 5.70 million mt of thermal coal in January, up 31% year on year and 15% from December and a three-month high primarily due to climbing Australian shipments, customs data showed late Wednesday.

Imports of Australia thermal coal increased 88% year on year and 22% month on month to 3.19 million mt.

Russian and Canadian shipments also rose in January -- Russian by 18% on the year and 87% from December to 605,523 mt, while Canadian volumes at 228,925 mt were more than double last January's 88,000 mt and December's 89,000 mt.

Indonesian coal shipments fell 16% on the year and 6% on the month to 1.44 million mt. Imports from South Africa also dropped 57% on-year and on-month to 142,190 mt in January.
