The Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) says a freight company has been found guilty of tampering with a heavy vehicle speed limiter and fined $8,000.
“In July 2012 Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) inspectors discovered the company had been operating a heavy vehicle with a speed limiter which had been tampered with,” director of customer and compliance Peter Wells said.
“Charges were filed against the operator who was ordered to appear in Goulburn Local Court on Friday 18 January.
“The heavy vehicle operator was found guilty of the offence and a conviction was recorded. The company was ordered to pay court and professional costs as well as the fine.”
The maximum penalty for a company found to be operating a heavy vehicle with a tampered speed limiter is $16,500 for each offence.
“Heavy vehicles are speed limited to 100km/h in NSW for the safety of the drivers and other motorists.
“RMS continues to work closely with the New South Wales Police Force Traffic and Highway Patrol Command to reduce the dangerous practice of heavy vehicle speeding and speed limiter tampering.
“Owner/operators of a heavy vehicle covered under this legislation who have tampered with speed limiters are on notice.
“Heavy vehicles detected speeding and having non compliant speed limiters will be grounded.
“This is not about inconveniencing those drivers and operators who do the right thing.
“If you follow the rules you won’t have anything to worry about,” Mr Wells said.
