Trade Resources Industry Views Notebook Players to Expand Into Non-PC Market

Notebook Players to Expand Into Non-PC Market

With the notebook market expected to continue seeing a single-digit percentage shipment decline in 2016, brand vendors and ODMs are expected to become more aggressive pushing into the Internet of Things (IoT) sector to boost their non-PC incomes and adopting components from China-based suppliers to save costs, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Although tablets' impact on the notebook market is continuing to weaken, the already saturated notebook market is still expected to see a slight on-year decline.

Many players are looking to expand into the cloud and IoT sectors, but most of them are unlikely to achieve any significant results in 2016 since the IoT sector's outlook remains unclear, the sources noted.

As the IoT market has yet to become stable enough, notebook players will still have to work hard for their core business. They are expected to focus on upgrading their notebooks' industrial designs to achieve thinner and lighter form factors, the sources said.

However, the sources expect gaming notebooks and 2-in-1 devices to continue enjoy strong demand and will attract more competitors to the segments.

Adopting China-based components and services is also a trend for notebook brand vendors and ODMs to save costs, and such a trend could pose a threat to these players' existing Taiwan-based partners and related industries.
