Switzerland-based plantmaker SMS Concast has announced that it will supply a 150-ton electric arc furnace (EAF) and process equipment for the US-based steelmaker Republic Steel, to be installed at its Lorain, Ohio plant.
The new electric arc furnace will increase the company's annual liquid steel production by 1.2 million tons. The new furnace will feed Republic Steel's bloom and billet casters for the production of 7.5-165 mm diameter special bar quality (SBQ) steel bar and coil, and 152, 280, 305 and 355 mm diameter seamless round tube.
Republic Steel said that the additional capacity from the new furnace will allow the company more flexibility and efficiency in delivering the highly engineered products the customers require.
The electric arc furnace will come into production in the second quarter of 2013.
