Rigid plastic packaging and devices manufacturer Rexam Healthcare has announced the expansion of its La Verpillière site near Lyon in France to create a building including about 2400m² of clean room.
The company will produce sub-sets of insulin injection pens for the Eli Lilly group from the new building. The pen is composed of over a dozen plastic parts and a metal spring, and has two sub-sets: the dose selection mechanism, as well as the protective cap.
According to the company, the glass cartridge filled with insulin which is inserted in the pen is produced by the Eli Lilly group at its Fegersheim site near Strasbourg.
The injection pen components will be manufactured by a fleet of robots including injection presses, marking machines, assembly line with ultrasound welding and packaging technology.
Each phase will be controlled by a camera system. The plastic parts, which have been designed to be produced by multi-imprint moulds on electric injection presses, will be in a material chosen by Eli Lilly.
The La Verpillière site, which also houses Rexam Healthcare's European Technology Centre, specializes in drug administration systems, such as inhalers for asthma and injection devices.
