a Welsh Council Has Unveiled a Mattress Recycling Facility

A Welsh council has unveiled a mattress recycling facility, with an aim to reduce the number of mattresses in the area being sent to landfill.

Rhondda Cynon Taf county borough council has put up a machine at its Bryn Pica Landfill and Waste Recycling Centre in Llwydcoed.
Over £400,000 was invested by the Welsh government for this initiative, according to letsrecycle.com.

Since mattresses a number of materials go into making of mattresses, it has been difficult to recycle them.

The council, however, said the purpose built machine can break down mattresses into the separate components, such as steel springs, foam and fabric, which can be recycled.

Built by equipment manufacturer EBS Automation in Llanelli, the machine is fully contained within a 5,000ft² building, which according to council is said to be the first of its kind in the whole world.
