The lowest price for an LED light bulb will drop from US$8 in 2014 to US$5 in 2015 and ex-factory prices will slip to US$2-3 in 2015, according to chairman Lee Biing-jye for Taiwan-based LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Epistar.

The price drop is mainly because many China-based LED packaging service providers and LED lighting makers have started price-cut competition, Lee indicated.

There were 900-1,200 million LED light bulbs sold around the world in 2014, and the volume in 2015 is expected to reach 2.0-2.5 billion units, Lee said.

Epistar will not install MOCVD sets to expand production capacity in 2015, Lee said, instead, Epistar will adjust existing MOCVD equipment to increase output by up to 50%.
