Gotham Continues Its Tradition as a Leader in Architectural Downlighting

From electric lamps to LED technology, Gotham continues its tradition as a leader in architectural downlighting.

For 75 years, Gotham has thrived as one of the most respected names in architectural lighting. In 1938, Harry Gerstel, a devotee of well-known architect and lighting pioneer Richard Kelly, founded Gotham® architectural downlighting in New York City.

Since its beginning, Gotham heritage has made a commitment to product leadership and breakthroughs in downlighting. Today, the company continues to enhance its product leadership with the latest innovations in LED downlighting.

Early Gotham lighting installations include architectural classics such as the Seagram's Building, Lever House, McGraw Hill and the CBS building in New York City. Throughout the years, Gotham has consistently improved performance and aesthetic appeal of wallwash and downlighting, making significant investments in product design and innovation.

"For more than 75 years, Gotham has stayed true to our founding principles of product development, helping to bring life and emotion to architectural spaces,” said Douglas Grove, Acuity Brands Lighting Vice President and Gotham Value Stream Leader. “With this historical knowledge of the art of lighting and in-depth understanding of science and technology, we are focused on continued development of these luminaires, while addressing today's challenges of energy and sustainability.”

Today, as always, Gotham focuses on architectural integration, optical performance, reliability and innovative manufacturing processes. Its innovative products span conventional and LED lighting sources in a variety of open and lensed downlights, directional downlights, pendant, shower, wall wash, decorative and retrofit luminaires.
