Researchers are already planning how to grow food for those future generations that will inhabit other planets and even the moon. NASAscientists have determined that in order for humans to grow food on another planet the environment will need to mock Earth. Some of NASA’s current design ideas include yes you guessed it, the hallow lava tubes of the moon. Granted the dark and dingy quarters of these abandoned lava tubes would hardly sustain life, NASA’s high-tech out of this world technology makes anything possible.

Although still under research, but worth mentioning, Forbes science journalist Bruce Dorminey states that “state of the art LED (Light-emitting Diode) technology is arguably what will drive photosynthesis so necessary to provide both food and oxygen for future lunar colonists.”
But why LEDs? Purdue University’s plant biologist Cary Mitchell mentions that LEDs:
Would produce less heat than other bulbs Last at least 50,000 hours 5 times longer than conventional horticultural light sources Hardy enough to withstand the journey to the moon
Once on the moon the LEDs would be strung inside radiation-hardened solid greenhouses or inflatable lava tunnel greenhouses.
