Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept Has Been Revealed Ahead of Its Unveiling at Geneva Motor Show

Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept: Plug-in Ute Teases New Triton

The Mitsubishi GR-HEV concept has been revealed ahead of its unveiling at Geneva motor show later today.

The GR-HEV concept (the name means ‘Grand Runner Hybrid Electric Vehicle’) gives us our first look at Mitsubishi’s vision for its next-generation Triton ute, which is scheduled to enter production in 2014.

The Mitsubishi GR-HEV concept embraces the brand’s new ‘dual design’ philosophy, teaming a 2.5-litre clean-diesel engine and an electric motor with full-time four-wheel drive and Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control vehicle dynamics control system. The concept’s Super Select 4WD system allows drivers to choose between four modes (2H, 4H, 4HL, 4LL) in the pursuit of optimum fuel efficiency and all-terrain performance.

The Japanese manufacturer is targeting average CO2 emissions of less than 149 grams per kilometre for its hybrid ute, translating to combined cycle fuel consumption of approximately 5.6 litres per 100km.

At 5420mm long, 1930mm wide, 1775mm tall and riding on a 3000mm wheelbase, the five-seat GR-HEV concept has similar dimensions to the current Triton dual cab, with the new version measuring 31mm longer and 130mm wider.

While futuristic in its design, elements of the Triton are evident in the GR-HEV concept, suggesting the new ute will evolve stylistically and retain distinguishing features of the existing model.

The high-mounted grille, broad door panels, swept up windowsill and muscular rear give the impression of strength, while the intricate LED headlights and tail-lights add to the car’s high-tech, modern character.
