Manufacturers in Australia Are Set to Launch a New Program to Increase The Recycling

The packaged food, drink and grocery product manufacturers in New South Wales, Australia, are set to launch a new program to increase the recycling of bottles and plastic drink containers in the state.

The program, which will see the installation of around 150,000 public recycling bins in the state, will be examined by the state government.

Beverage companies intend to fund for the installation of 166,000 recycling bins in the country, as part of the proposed national recycling action plan (NRAP).

New South Wales premier Mike Baird was quoted by The Daily Telegraph as saying that prior to making a decision before 2014-end the state will evaluate the option.

"The environmental, economic and social costs and benefits of many different options to increase recycling and reduce litter are being assessed," Baird added.

The decision to introduce recycling bins in the state comes on the heels of the launch of a scheme proposed by the federal as well as state governments to tax bottled and packaged drinks which could annually cost $8bn to the consumers.

An exclusive report by the publication revealed all ten options that are being considered by both the governments.

The alternatives to cut down litter, while increasing recycling is expected to raise prices and cost between $88m and $8bn to the consumers.

The Australian Food and Grocery Council CEO Gary Dawson was quoted by publication as saying, "Importantly the National Recycling Action Plan would not cost the taxpayer a cent."
