South African packaging company Nampak is all set to invest ZAR1.6bn ($180m) in two of its core businesses which produce bottles and cans for the growing beverage market.
Almost ZAR1bn ($112m) will be invested by the company in an additional furnace at its glass bottle business based at Roodekop, Germiston in the first project.
According to the company, the business already has two furnaces and a third furnace is expected to enhance overall manufacturing efficiencies and enable it to supply a wide range of bottles.
The second project will see the company invest about ZAR600m ($68m) to add aluminum beverage can capacity and convert existing lines from tinplate to aluminum at the Springs plant.
A new high speed line is being installed at the plant for commisioning expected in May 2013 and will be followed by the conversion of the other existing lines.
Nampak chairman Tito Mboweni said the two projects would bolster the company's position in the beverage can and glass packaging sectors in South Africa.
"despite the challenging economic conditions in South Africa where we generate some 70% of our revenue we remain confident of a further improvement in performance in 2013," Mboweni said.
