The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® today announced that U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler and U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairwoman Edith Ramirez will be featured speakers at the 2015 International CES®. In addition, for the first time in CES history, the full slate of commissioners from both agencies will participate in a roundtable discussion on critical regulatory, law enforcement and policy issues facing the technology industry. Owned and produced by CEA, the 2015 CES is the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technologies, and will run January 6-9, 2015, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“For four days in January, all eyes are on the tech industry—including the eyes of regulators and policy makers,” said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “This level of engagement from FCC and FTC leadership is unprecedented, and speaks to the increasing strength of CES not only as an incomparable showcase for the latest in technology innovation, but also as a hotbed for the policy discussions that will set the agenda and impact the industry for the coming year and beyond.”
FCC Chairman Wheeler will join Shapiro for what has become an annual rite of passage. The 13th consecutive FCC Chairman SuperSession at CES will be a candid discussion on spectrum issues, developments in broadband and open Internet, competition policy and other critical issues. The conversation will also recap Chairman Wheeler’s exciting and busy first year.
FTC Chairwoman Ramirez will deliver opening remarks for the conference session, “Privacy and the Internet of Things (IoT): Navigating Policy Issues,” part of the Innovation Policy conference track, which brings together top government officials, entrepreneurs and policy experts to explore the relationship between technology innovation and public policies while addressing major issues impacting American innovators and U.S. competitiveness. Chairwoman Ramirez will tee up a conversation exploring steps that manufacturers and policymakers can take to build consumer trust in devices and applications while preserving creativity and flexibility to innovate.
Also a part of the Innovation Policy conference track, FCC Commissioners Mignon Clyburn, Jessica Rosenworcel, Ajit Pai and Michael O’Rielly will join their counterparts at the FTC, Commissioners Julie Brill, Maureen Ohlhausen, Joshua Wright and Terrell McSweeny, for a roundtable discussion on hot policy topics such as spectrum allocation, privacy, accessibility, the Internet of Things and regulatory reform. They’ll also discuss how the FCC and FTC work together and separately to move policies forward.
