The Indian consumer affairs ministry is planning to take legal action against Maruti Suzuki for taking pre-launch booking of its mid-size sedan Ciaz.
Former Indian Railways Minister and MP Dinesh Trivedi has filed a complaint claiming that he received complaints from public about Maruti taking orders for Ciaz before officially unveiling the car or giving out price details.
The ministry is reportedly labeling the incident as an unfair trade practice.
Reports suggest that the car maker has responded to Trivedi's complaint as unacceptable, and said that customers had the option to check newspaper reviews and not book the car.
However, the ministry has asked Maruti to provide complete details of the pre-launch booking programme.
The Economic Times got an e mail response from Maruti Suzuki spokesperson saying: "accepting bookings for the Ciaz is in no way an unfair trade practice and nor does it violate consumer rights."
The Consumer Protection Act "provides a consumer the right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods so as to protect the consumer against unfair trade practices."
