Indonesia Is Planning to Raise Competitiveness of Textile Sector

Indonesian Industry Ministry would help refurbish equipment and machineries of textile units in a bid to raise the competitiveness of country's textile and textile products (TPT) industry, Antara News agency reported.

Industry Ministry Secretary-General Anshari Bukhari said as a part of the revamping drive, textile firms would be provided textile machinery and equipments by the Government. The Government would also make provision for imparting technical training for workers.

Noting that the textile industry witnessed a 6.86 percent dip in its exports during first three quarters of the current year, Mr. Bukhari attributed this fall to poor trade performance, mainly in key export markets like the EU, US, Japan and ASEAN countries.

Stating that the fall is mainly on account of global economic slump, he said that enhanced competitiveness is expected to help country's textile industry to achieve a 6.52 percent growth in 2014, with a workforce of over 216,000 people.

Chairman of Textile Technology College, Noerati said the demand for skilled workforce in the textile sector has always remained above the actual number of textile technology pass-outs. Hence, the Government is now looking at developing a skilled workforce for the TPT industry.

Adding around 13,000 new skilled workers per year, a 17-18 percent enhancement in annual production capacity, a 7-17 percent rise in productivity and 6-8 percent improvement in energy efficiency are some of the targets that the industry is pursuing, she added.
