Sony Set to Smash Smartphone Games Market in 2018?

Tags: Smartphone, Sony

Sony will bring at least five games based on PlayStation titles to Android and iOS smartphones in the next 18 months according to a report.

As Japanese news site Nikkei states, the new games will initially launch in Asia in the business year ending March 2018.

The company previously announced its new ForwardWorks division in March, with the aim of producing new smartphone games based on well-known PlayStation titles. But until now it was unclear when we could expect to see anything from the new division.

It seems the mobile gaming arm will be creating both new titles and reviving older games that "cannot be played on the latest hardware".

The report also claims the new mobile games will be linked to consoles in some way, and that specific titles will be announced by the end of this year.

Sony's latest effort to conquer the mobile gaming market comes after previous attempts which were less than successful.

The company has already attempted to move into the sphere with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and the PlayStation Mobile initiative, both of which failed to take off in any meaningful way.

Whether the Japanese firm will have more luck by making use of its massively successful PlayStation catalogue of games remains to be seen, but it certainly seems like a solid approach.

There's been no word from the company on whether this latest report from Nikkei is legitimate, so take the news of a 2018 timeframe with due caution.

Sony has this week launched its new PlayStation VR headset, which looks to be a serious contender for the best, or at least most accessible, virtual reality hardware.

We'll have more on the company's mobile gaming ambitions in the near future so stay tuned.
