Pearl Necklace Sells for a Record $5m

This four-strand pearl necklace was the second highest-grossing lot of the sale--topped only by a 5.29-carat purplish-pink diamond--and was the only lot to set a new world auction record.

A four-strand natural colored pearl necklace set a world auction record when it sold for just over $5 million Tuesday at Christie’s New York.

Boasting pearls measuring in size from 4.90 mm to 12.65 mm, the necklace was purchased by a private buyer from Asia and is now the most expensive natural colored pearl necklace ever bought at auction.

All told, Christie’s April 14 sale of Magnificent Jewels in New York totaled $41.9 million, and was 77 percent sold both by lot and by value.

“Natural pearls achieved very strong prices and … there was spirited bidding for colored pink and blue diamonds along with all of the JAR creations offered at the auction,” said Rahul Kadakia, international head of Christie’s Jewelry.
