Amazon.com has announced plans to open a 1 million-square-foot distribution centre in Carteret, New Jersey, which is expected to create hundreds of full-time jobs at the site when the distribution centre opens (fulfilment centre in Amazon speak).

“We’re excited to open a new, state-of-the-art distribution centre in Carteret, creating hundreds of full-time jobs that offer wages 30 per cent higher than traditional retail stores and include comprehensive benefits on day one, bonuses and stock awards,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations.

Amazon shipped the first item from its existing New Jersey distribution centre in Robbinsville in July of 2014. The company employs thousands of full-time employees at its Robbinsville distribution centre and continues to hire to meet growing customer demand.

In addition to good wages, Amazon offers hourly employees innovative programs like Career Choice, where the company will pre-pay up to 95 per cent of tuition for courses related to in-demand fields, regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon. Since the program’s launch, employees are pursuing degrees in game design and visual communications, nursing, IT programming and radiology, to name a few.
